Calling All Athletes!

Hey everyone

I was hoping we could put together some sort of list of Athletic events going on in the prefecture primarily, all of Kyushu secondly, and all of Japan finally. Personally I'm interested in running/bike/swimming/triathlon events. (Though I wouldn't mind hearing about other random games of soccer or ultimate frisbee or whatever really)

For example:

Kumamoto
Harukaze Marathon - Hitoyoshi (February)
--5k, 10k, half
Ichigo Marathon - Tamana (February)
--distances?
Sakura Matsuri Marathon - Mizukami (March)
--5k, 10k, halfish?
Amakusa Triathlon - Amakusa (June)
-Sprint, Olympic
Kumagawa Marathon - Asagiri (August)
--not sure what distances
'Fruit' Ladies Marathon - Nishiki (September)
--not sure what distances
Yamato Trail Run? - Yamato(September)
--30km? http://runnet.jp/runtes/raceDetail/entry/b29657.html
Mt. Ichifusa Marathon - Mizukami (October)
--not sure what distances

Kyushu
Aoshima Marathon - Miyazaki (December)
--5k, 10k, half, full
Ibusuki Nanohana Marathon - Kagoshima(Dec/Jan?)
--10k, half, full?
Fukuoka Marathon - Fukuoka (December)
--full only?
Triathlon in Fukuoka - September? (Only heard a rumor about this, haven't actually seen any info)

Japan
Tokyo Marathon - Tokyo (March)
--full (lottery to get in, apply in August)

So ya, I know there is a ton more than this even just locally. So if anyone has any information on anything feel free to share.

I heard from the other Team F.A.T. members that the only triathlon in Kyushu is the Amakusa one. Seems crazy that there's only one, but that's what it looks like. Hope I'm wrong... There's also a famous marathon in Miyazaki, which includes a full, half, 10K, 5K, and 3K, i believe. It is in December, so I think the sign-up is September or so. Tokyo marathon's sign-up was in October and very difficult, but I think they give foreigners a very nice advantage in the lottery system compared to Japanese folks. I was rejected first, then was accepted in November, so if you are rejected first you should still consider starting training because you might get in later.

I'm very interested in 5K and 10K races, so please post if you see any. I also know that the 1st Kumamoto Marathon in Feb. 2012 will also have a 5K run, and there's a cool "Ichigo Marathon" in Tamana in Feb. as well, including a full, half, and 5K run with lots of strawberries... I will post or let you know on facebook if I see others.

Hey guys,

I'm gonna apply for a place in next year's Tokyo Marathon (registration period is August 1, 2011 -- August 31, 2011).
The marathon itself is on 26th February 2012. If I get a place, it'll be my first marathon. :)

Between now and then I'd also really like to do some half-marathons. I'd definitely be up for doing the one in Miyazaki in December.

So it’d be really cool to hear from anyone who’s thinking of doing the Tokyo marathon, any upcoming half-marathons or just general long-distance running in the prefecture generally. :D

Best,
Hugo

p.s. Is there any kind of ALT running group in the prefecture at the moment? :kumamon:

Cool thread! I'm not like super-duper mega athletic woman, but I do work out daily and looove to run. Sounds dumb but my biggest fear about applying for JET was giving up my daily run but some JETs told me this shouldn't be a problem. A half marathon would probably be my limit but I'd love to find some running buddies :).

How are the gyms in Kumamoto? Preferably near Mashiki machi but anywhere within a reasonable range would do I guess? Does anyone have experience joining them? Is it hard? Any idea if the cost is generally higher/lower than the states? Any special rules?

I think that you'll be able to run here whenever you'd like. I tend to go on night-runs because I don't care for the stares but I find that I'm able to do it more here than back home. There are plenty of marathons and half-marathons that take place throughout the year. In Tamana, there is the Ichigo marathon that takes place in February.

There are plenty of gyms about. If you're placed in Mashiki, you shouldn't have a problem taking a bus to one of the downtown gyms. I have never used a gym here in Japan because they're a little out of my price range but I have heard that some of the downtown ones are pretty good. I do go to the local pool 2-3 times a week though so I think you'll have a lot available to you.

You'll do fine finding some running partners, and hopefully someone else can answer your questions about gyms. I started running because I'm so far out in the inaka it isn't worth the 40min drive to the dinky little gym that is near me. You should be closer to a gym and definitely closer to a bigger gym. I know some people around the city have joined gyms with success, but that's about all I know on the subject. Good luck with that. Look forward to meeting you sometime in the near future.

So I found a website for the Kumamoto Badminton Team (http://www31.ocn.ne.jp/~kmbd/) and I was wondering if anyone knows if forgiengers are allowed to join? Or if there is an inter-mural badminton team or anything? I love me some badminton

I honestly have no idea. . .

Also for all you soccer fans out there, there is a weekly soccer game in Kumamoto. Every Sunday 4:30-7:30 (weather dependent) Folks meet up for a game of pick me up. You can come late, leave early, whatever suits your needs. Takes place at the sannomaru park by Kumamoto castle. Just make sure you don't park in any of the castle parking lots since they close at 4:30. I haven't quite figured out what the alternative is other than parking by the kotsu center and walking up, or if you live nearby and are taking public transportation/biking there anyway. This used to be a JET game, but now its mostly ex-JETs and other random foreigners and a few Japanese friends (Can I just say it was REALLY weird to be playing soccer in English again). Good group of people, lots of fun, and a really good workout. :D
