Books (sell/trade/giveaway) thread

Postby Todd » Thu Aug 04, 2011 3:48 pm

Greetings to whosoever out there loves to read. I wanted to start up a thread to help redistribute the massive amounts of English books gathering dust on the shelves in our prefecture. I feel a book that isn't being read is almost as wasteful as an ALT who spends his time reading instead of going out and living in Japan :? . Feel free to jump on with a list of books you own and want to lend out, or want to give away, or books (or types of books) you are currently seeking.

As for me, I just bought a kindle so I'll have more than enough books to read for all eternity in one tiny device, and I have no need for the multitude of books in my apartment, most of which were left here by a succession of predecessors. These books mostly seem like lengthy but easy reads, historical fiction abounds. Please let me know if you are interested in any/all of these, we'll work something out so I can get them in your hands, if only in a round-about fashion.

Here's my list (Author - Title)

Alfred Bester - The Demolished Man
Andrey Patonov - The Foundation Pit
Ann Patchett - Bel Canto
Bill Bryson - Notes from a Small Island
Charles Bukowski - Factotum
Charlotte Bronte - Jane Eyre
David Mitchell - Number9dream
Denis Johnson - Tree of Smoke
Douglas Coupland - Girlfriend in a Coma
E. L. Doctorow - Ragtime
Eiji Yoshikawa - Musashi
Emile Zola - Germinal
Eric Schlosser - Fast Food Nation

James Clavell - Shogun
Laura Joh Rowland - Shinju
Lindsey Davis - The Silver Pigs
Michael Ignatieff - The Needs of Strangers: An essay on privacy, solidarty, and the politics of being human
Naguib Mahfouz - Palace Walk
Nic Kelman - Girls
Nigel Worden - The Making of Modern South Africa
Orhan Pamuk - My Name is Red
Pat Barker - Regeneration
Patricia Cornwell - Cruel and Unusual

Hey, that's a good idea. I've left a bunch of books in my apartment that Philip doesn't want. I'm going to donate them to the Kumajet book sale if there is one. If anyone is interested in the following authors let me know and i can get them to Orientation. Its mostly fantasy and sci-fi with some mystery, romance and suspense. I did post some authors on the Kumajet facebook page but only heard from one person. Anyone looking for someone new to read might want to have a look, cheap books are way better to sample than ebooks (which i devour like crazy now)

Off the top of my head:
Jim Butcher: several of the early books in the Harry Dresden series
Jack McDevitt: Chindi? Several i don't remember which
S. L. Viehl- Several are not available as ebooks and currently out of print :(
Sherrilyn Kenyon
Other random urban fantasy i picked up every time i went home

Sorry, can't remember any more. In Vietnam ;)
